Baccarat Rules: A Simple Guide for Beginners
Baccarat is one of the most refined and simple card games in the casino world. Made famous by cinema, it is a game of pure chance. Unlike Blackjack or Poker, you have no decisions to make after the cards are dealt. Your only role is to bet on the winning hand!
Here is everything you need to know to understand a round and start playing easily at home.
The Core Principle
In Baccarat, the dealer distributes two cards to two fictional hands: the Player and the Banker. The objective is to predict which of these two hands will achieve a point total closest to 9.
You can bet on the Player, on the Banker, or on a Tie.
Calculating the Points
Card values in Baccarat are unique and very easy to remember:
- The Ace: It is worth 1 point.
- From 2 to 9: Cards retain their face value.
- 10, Jack, Queen, King (Face Cards): They are all worth 0 points.
The "Drop the Ten" Rule: A total score in Baccarat can never exceed 9. If the sum of the cards is 10 or higher, the first digit is simply dropped.
Example: If a hand receives a 7 and an 8, the sum is 15. Drop the "1", and the hand value is 5 points!
How a Round Works
- Placing Bets: You place your chips on either the "Player", "Banker", or "Tie" section.
- The Deal: The dealer distributes two cards face up to the Player and two cards to the Banker.
- The Third Card (Automatic): Based on a strict set of fixed rules managed by the dealer (requiring no decision from you), a third card may be dealt to either hand.
- The Verdict: The hand with the point total closest to 9 wins.
Payouts and Odds
- Betting on the Player: Doubles your wager (pays 1 to 1).
- Betting on the Banker: Doubles your wager (pays 1 to 1, though casinos typically take a small 5% commission because the Banker hand statistically wins slightly more often).
- Betting on a Tie: This is the rarest bet, but it offers the biggest payout! It typically pays 8 to 1.
